"ROSE was born when, decades ago, I was asked to provide harp music for a wedding I knew would be personally and emotionally challenging to play. This piece was constructed so it could be completely improvised - it follows the chord progression of Canon in D, but then unfolds into a three-chord motif that can be repeated as long as needed to shorten or lengthen the song.

Version 1, Beginnings employs simple arpeggios and chord shapes, has a slower waltz-like flavor, repeats once, is in the key of D major in 3/4 time, and is two pages. There are no lever or pedal changes."
