Claude Debussy’s Danses sacrée et profane has been a staple of the harp repertoire since its composition in 1904. Originally written for chromatic harp, the work was later transcribed for pedal harp by the legendary harpist Henriette Renié in 1910.
For this carefully researched edition, Carl Swanson compared Renié’s pedal harp transcription with Debussy’s original manuscript housed at the National Library of France. While retaining most of Renié’s editorial work, Swanson restored several of Debussy’s original musical indications and notes that had been altered in the earlier edition.
This newly engraved edition—the first new engraving of the work since 1910—also offers practical improvements for today’s harpist. Pedal changes are printed in a large, dark typeface for easy visibility, while the spacious page layout provides three or four systems per page, leaving additional room for the performer to make notes.
Throughout the edition, footnotes highlight differences between Renié’s transcription and Debussy’s original manuscript, giving harpists valuable insight into the history and preparation of this important work.
