Marcel Tournier is one of the most important harpist-composers in the history of the instrument, best known for the distinctive impressionistic style of his later works. Intermediate Pieces for Solo Harp, Volume II offers a glimpse into an earlier period of Tournier’s career through a collection of nine previously unpublished pieces.
The works in this volume were discovered by harpist Carl Swanson in manuscript form. Working with renowned harpist Catherine Michel, Swanson carefully prepared the pieces for publication, clarifying the original manuscripts and adding practical performance information, including fingerings, tempos, musical nuances, pedal markings, and pedal diagrams.
Written when Tournier was in his twenties, these pieces predate the impressionistic style for which he would later become known. Instead, they reflect the late-Romantic tradition taught at the Paris Conservatory during his early career.
The nine Déchiffrages are short, beautiful works at an intermediate level, making them approachable additions to the solo harp repertoire while offering players the opportunity to explore rarely heard music by a major harpist-composer.
