Deuxième Fantaisie de Concert (Second Concert Fantasy)

Marcel Tournier
Edited by Carl Swanson and Catherine Michel
For Solo Harp

Marcel Tournier is regarded as one of the most important harpist-composers in the history of the instrument, with a substantial body of works that have become an essential part of the harp repertoire. Deuxième Fantaisie de Concert offers harpists the opportunity to discover a previously unknown work from an early period of Tournier’s career.

The manuscript was discovered unexpectedly among a collection of old photocopies in Germany. The location of Tournier’s original manuscript remains unknown. Working from these copies, Carl Swanson and renowned harpist Catherine Michel carefully prepared the piece for publication, making numerous editorial decisions to bring the manuscript into a clear and playable form.

The edition includes fingerings, pedal markings, and pedal diagrams, along with carefully revised notation and enharmonic spellings where needed to clarify how the music is intended to be performed.

Tournier wrote this work at just 21 years old, before developing the impressionistic style for which he later became known. Instead, the Fantaisie reflects the late-Romantic musical style taught at the Paris Conservatory during this period.

At approximately eight minutes in length and at an intermediate level, Deuxième Fantaisie de Concert is an exciting bravura piece by a major composer and a valuable addition to the intermediate harp repertoire.
